Drywall Repair in Kansas City
Homeowners in Weatherby Lake, Platte Woods, Blue Summit, and Edwardsville trust our plaster and drywall work. We deliver quality results at fair prices for homes of every style -- from historic Victorians in Hyde Park to mid-century modern homes in Armour Hills.
Kansas City humidity puts stress on drywall tape and joint compound, especially in basements and bathrooms. We see tape lifting, corner bead cracking, and moisture-related damage in homes across the metro. All fixable before painting.
Holes happen. Doorknobs punch through walls. Water leaks leave stains and soft spots. Cracks show up along seams and corners as a house settles. None of it looks good, and none of it is hard to fix. If you know what you are doing.
We handle drywall repair as part of the painting process. The crew that patches your wall is the same crew that primes and paints it. That matters because drywall repair is really just painting prep done right. If the patch is sloppy, the paint will show it.
Small holes from nails, screws, and anchors are quick fixes. We fill them with lightweight spackle, sand flush, and prime. You will never know they were there.
Medium holes. Fist-sized or from a doorknob. Need a patch. We cut a clean opening, fit a new piece of drywall, tape the seams with paper or mesh tape, and apply two to three coats of joint compound. Each coat gets sanded smooth before the next one goes on. The goal is a perfectly flat surface with no visible seam lines.
Large holes and damaged sections get a full cutback. We cut to the nearest studs on each side, install a new piece of drywall, and tape and mud the joints. For ceiling damage or areas larger than two feet, we may need to add backing supports. We build it back to match the surrounding wall exactly.
Water damage is its own category. If drywall has gotten wet, we check for soft spots, mold, and structural damage behind the wall. Wet drywall loses its integrity. It sags, crumbles, and grows mold if it is not replaced. We cut out the damaged section, let the framing dry completely, treat for mold if needed, and install new drywall.
Texture matching is where most DIY repairs fall apart. Your walls probably have a specific texture. Orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, or smooth. We match whatever is there so the repair disappears into the surrounding wall. We keep samples of the most common textures and can replicate just about anything we encounter.
After the repair is solid and the texture is matched, we prime everything with a stain-blocking primer. This seals the joint compound, evens out the porosity, and gives the finish paint a uniform surface to grip. Without primer, patches absorb paint differently than the surrounding wall and show through as dull spots. Even with two coats of paint.
Most drywall repairs take less than a day. Larger jobs or water damage work may take two days to allow for drying time between coats. We clean up after ourselves and leave the wall ready for its finish coat.
The bottom line is this: we fix the wall before we paint it. Every time. That is how you get a paint job that looks right and stays right.

Drywall Repair questions
Can you match my existing wall texture? expand_more
Yes. We match orange peel, knockdown, skip trowel, smooth, and most other textures. We test on a scrap piece first to dial in the pattern before applying it to your wall. Once it is painted, the repair should be invisible.
How do you handle water-damaged drywall? expand_more
We cut out the wet or damaged section, inspect the framing behind it for mold or rot, treat any issues, and install new drywall. We will not patch over water damage. That just hides the problem. The source of the water needs to be fixed first, which is something your plumber or roofer handles before we come in.
Why not just use a DIY patch kit from the hardware store? expand_more
Patch kits work for tiny nail holes. For anything bigger, they leave visible edges, wrong textures, and uneven surfaces. The mesh-and-spackle approach in those kits does not build up a flat enough surface for paint. You will see the patch every time you look at the wall.
Do you paint after repairing the drywall? expand_more
We always prime the repair. Most customers have us paint the full wall or room at the same time since matching paint color on a spot repair is tough. Even with the same paint can, the sheen can look different on the patched area versus the aged wall around it.
How long does a drywall repair take? expand_more
Most repairs are done in a single day. Larger jobs or water damage work may need two days because joint compound and primer need drying time between coats. We will give you the timeline during the estimate so there are no surprises.
Drywall Repair for Kansas City homes
Kansas City has its own signature. The Shirtwaist, with brick on the first floor and wood or shingle above. We paint a lot of them, plus Tudors in Brookside, Craftsman bungalows in Waldo, and suburban homes across both sides of the state line. From historic Hyde Park to new builds in Overland Park, we've done the work.
KC summers hit 85%+ humidity, and that's hard on paint during application and curing. We have two good exterior painting windows. Late April through early June, and mid-September through mid-October. On Shirtwaist homes we use masonry-appropriate coatings on the brick lower level and exterior-grade paints up top, all in one project with one crew.
